The nation of Brazil has made a masterpiece, and most of the world has never heard its name. On the 3rd of February 2015, a brand new military aircraft took to the sky for the very first time above the city of Sao Paulo. Its designation was the C-390.
Its name was the Millennium, and although the aircraft's designers and the leaders of Brazil didn't know it at the time, their new creation would turn out to be among the most transformative additions that the military aviation world had seen in decades.
The Millennium is highly capable, it's highly versatile, and if Brazil can play its cards right, it can change the way the entire world thinks about military airlift. A powerful platform.
Now, by its very nature, any new piece of technology is a product of the moment in which it was created, and the C-390 Millennium is no different. Brazil's leading aerospace corporation Embraer first started down the path that led to the C-390's design in the early 2000s, as the wider world was settling into a post-Cold War order.
From Vietnam to Panama, from Iraq to Afghanistan, the United States had proved that modern wars were won or lost on logistics, and that a nation's ability to place its military assets into operating theatres quickly, and then sustain those operations, was of paramount importance.
The nations who could do logistics best were able to do it by air, where military aircraft split into two basic categories, strategic airlifters and tactical airlifters. Strategic airlifters were the true behemoths, like America's C-5 and C-17, or post-Soviet Russia's AN-124 and IL-76.
Those were the aircraft that could transport payloads of up to 100 metric tons or more across entire oceans, doing the truly back-breaking work of global military logistics.
Tactical airlifters didn't have quite the range or quite the carrier capacity, but they arguably had even greater utility for most global militaries.
They were more than capable of flying for a few thousand kilometers at a time, with a couple of dozen metric tons of cargo in their holds, often in austere conditions, and a level of cost efficacy that most nations could find a way to live with. As of the early 2000s, Embraer wasn't going to be a player in the strategic airlift market.
There was too little demand. There wasn't really a place for anyone in the industry other than aerospace giants like Boeing and Airbus, and Embraer would have been in way over its head, trying to build something on that scale.
But Embraer did have a new fleet of civilian jetliners, the E-190 that had just introduced a global service, and the company's leaders were interested in bridging the gap from civilian long-range aircraft to a military version.
Not only that, but Embraer had a keen enough understanding of the global market for tactical airlifters that the company brass had realized that they were looking at a critical window to achieve something great. At that time, and still to this day, the global market for tactical airlifters was dominated by a single platform.
The C-130 Hercules, first introduced to military service all the way back in 1956.
The C-130 is a highly versatile platform. It's been adapted into everything from air-to-air tankers, to gunships, to firefighting vessels, and a whole lot more. And look, to its credit, the aircraft has more than earned its place in the pantheon of military aircraft history.
But the C-130 is also really, really old. 1956. And Embraer executives understood that over the next couple of decades, C-130s were going to start aging out of service. 1956. Similarly, aircraft like the AN-12 and the Franco-German C-160 were doing no better.
And oddly enough, the rest of the aerospace world wasn't moving to fill the gap. Lockheed Martin had staked its claim on the idea of a direct update to the C-130J Super Hercules, first introduced in 1999, Italy's C-27J, Spain's C-295, and Russia's AM-32 didn't have nearly the internal carrier capacity to compete.
The A400M by Airbus was a promising platform, but it was also more expensive and much larger than the C-130, making it unaffordable and impractical for a lot of global customers.
Not to mention delays would mean that it wouldn't go operational for another decade. And as Embraer's executives ran the numbers, they were able to confirm what they already suspected.
If any company could build a true replacement and upgrade for the C-130 and its peers in the same generation, then that company could tap into a market that might demand up to 700 new tactical airlifters as older models were forced into retirement.
So when Embraer went to design the aircraft that would evolve into the C-390, it was designing an aircraft to fill a specific niche. Something with roughly equivalent range and carrying capacity to the C-130, plus as many modern upgrades and design innovations as Embraer could find a way to shove into the thing.
For the purposes of today's episode, we're not going to rehash the full history of the Embraer design and development process.
Instead, suffice to say for now that Embraer's attempt absolutely succeeded. The company's initial plan to adapt a military version of its E-190 jetliner was abandoned in favor of a new design. And despite delays, red tape, and a brief plantation with the Boeing Corporation, Embraer succeeded in building its own complete prototype by October of 2014.
A few years later, the company tightened the final screws on the first production standard, C-390, and thus Brazil's millennium was born. Unlike the C-130 that it was built to replace, the C-390 is a jet aircraft, leveraging a high-winged amount of pair of V-2500 turbofan engines, also used on the Airbus A320.
Those jet engines could afford the C-390 an impressive top speed of 988 kilometers per hour at 614 miles per hour, or Mach 0.8.
Measuring 35 meters or 115 feet from tip to tail, and with a wingspan that's almost exactly the same, the C-390 comes with a squat, spread-out profile, and broad wings that allow it to take off easily on short runways or fly. at under 200 kilometers per hour without stalling.
The aircraft's claim to fame its cargo hold is capable of carrying 26,000 kilos or 57,000 pounds of cargo, either as pallets or as up to 80 troops or 74 stretchers and eight attendants.
Loaded to its fullest capacity, the C-390 can fly round trips at a range of 2,000 kilometers or can ferry its payload for up to 4,000 kilometers or around 2,500 miles, roughly equivalent to the entire north to south length of the nation that built the aircraft Brazil.
Carrying about half capacity, the C-390 hits a ferry range of over 10,000 kilometers or more than 5,400 miles, making it capable of a one-way flight from London to Bangkok, Tokyo to Sydney, Moscow to Johannesburg, or New York to Rio. Just as important are the C-390's onboard features.
Its cargo hold is designed to be able to fit up to two fully-tracked M113 armored personnel carriers, a black or helicopter, or a box or armored fighting vehicle.
It's equipped with a fully modern cockpit, including heads-up displays and enhanced vision systems, a commercial-grade avionics suite, full fly-by-wire controls, various modern navigational systems, a tactical radar, and an infrared countermeasures suite.
It's designed with the comfort of both pilots and passengers in mind, with all sorts of amenities that are simply absent aboard many comparable aircrafts.
It features three hardpoints with the capacity to carry external fuel tanks or a wide range of additional avionics pods, while it's perfectly capable of opening its cargo hold in flight to conduct airdrops or release paratroopers.
It features onboard systems to automate its airdrops or conduct them remotely, including at low altitudes. Not only that, but it's built to be highly modular, able to be refitted as an air-to-air refueling tank or a firefighting aircraft, an air ambulance, or in a range of other specialized configurations.
It's capable of being reconfigured into any available configuration in the span of just three hours or less, without the need for any specialized tools, and it's meant to be quickly refueled and checked on the ground before going airborne again, optimizing for the sorts of highly demanding constant operations that come with rapid military deployments or
Humanitarian missions.
In short, the C-390 is designed to be a truly utilitarian flying machine, built not just to provide a good enough alternative to the C-130 and its peers, but to provide a true modern replacement.
An International Hit When the Brazilian Air Force accepted the first of a planned 28 C-390s, receiving its inaugural delivery in September of 2019, the Embraer Corporation watched with bated breath.
Just weeks before the delivery, Portugal had agreed to pick up five brand new copies of the aircraft to replace its own C-130s, just like the millennium would replace older Hercules copies in Brazilian service.
Brasilia welcomed its groundbreaking, impressive, indigenous tactical airlifter amidst much international fanfare and waited for the export orders to start rolling in. And, well, Embraer waited for those, and they waited, and then they waited some more. Actually, the process was even more miserable than that.
But, in the early going. Brazil did get one early export order for the C-390 from the nation of Hungary, but it was the kind of ostensibly good news that actually just added insult to injury. Budapest placed an order for just two of the aircraft at a time when Embraer execs had been riding on their prior calculation that up to 700 orders could be coming.
So in the first few years that the millennium was operational, the global reception was substantially more frosty than Embraer had anticipated.
But the few copies that were in service, exclusively with the Brazilian Air Force, still gave Brazil the opportunity to prove that its new airlifter was effective, prove that it could do the job, and perhaps the initial apprehension of international buyers could be overcome. So with that, the C-390 set to work doing exactly that.
In its first couple of years in service, a C-390 ferried humanitarian aid to Lebanon after the 2020 explosion in Beirut. Several copies of the aircraft played a central role in a large-scale airlift of medical supplies to the isolated city of Manaus during the COVID pandemic, bringing medicine into the city and airlifting patients out.
A few months later, they airlifted medicine and critical search and rescue supplies to Haiti in the wake of a devastating earthquake.
In 2022, a C-390 evacuated Brazilian nationals from Ukraine, while another airdrop supplies into Antarctica.
By the spring of 2023, the Brazilian Air Force announced that its handful of C-390s had accumulated more than 8,000 flight hours and carried out missions on all seven continents, earning a final sign-off from the Brazilian government to confirm that it was operating to its fullest capacity.
After a short couple of years, as it became clear that Brazil's untested new airlifter was gaining valuable experience without falling apart, that frosty international reception started to heat up, and once the global procurement order started to roll in, it began to accumulate at a rapid pace.
First, it was the Netherlands choosing the C-390 to replace its C-130s in 2022. Then, in 2023, Brazil linked several deals at once—four copies to Austria, three to South Korea, and two to the Czech Republic. In 2024, Brazil agreed to provide three to Slovakia, four to Sweden, with the option of seven more to come, and two to Uzbekistan.
Morocco also later agreed to acquire the jet, although concrete numbers haven't yet been announced. In 2025, Portugal expanded its initial order and picked up a sixth copy of the jet, plus options to add another ten at a later date, while Lithuania inked a deal for three new copies.
Brazil's state-owned postal company, Corios, signed a deal in 2024 to procure a civilian cargo version of the C-390, while the resilient air force has requested a version that can be used for maritime patrol.
And even beyond the cascade of new contracts over the last three and a half years, Embraer has good reason to believe that more deals are coming.
In Saudi Arabia, the nation's primary state-owned defense company has partnered with Embraer to pitch the aircraft to Mohammed bin Salman, in a fairly strong indicator that the nation has privately decided already that it does want the jet. India is working with Embraer to create new assembly lines on Indian soil, as well as supplying aircraft to New Delhi.
Egypt appears to be interested, South Africa appears to be interested, and the UK's... BAE Systems are working to advertise the platform to Qatar, the Emirates, and other Middle Eastern nations. In 2025, Embraer reported that it was looking to provide up to 20 of the jets to Poland, as well as a potential order for Finland.
Because of its existing and anticipated agreements with NATO customers, Embraer may be able to contribute additional C-390s to the alliance's collective air wing, as NATO looks to expand its strategic and tactical airlift capabilities.
For a while, it even looked like the C-390 might even be on offer to the United States, an initiative that Embraer has expressed its desire to continue despite initial talks collapsing in late 2024.
Right now, Brazil is looking to supply the air-to-air refueling variant of the millennium, the KC-390, as the United States is next in air refueler, and Embraer has recently partnered with Northrop Grumman and tailored a new refueling system in order to get across the finish line.
All across the globe, it seems that international buyers have come to a common conclusion about the millennium that, despite their initial reservations, Brazil has built an aircraft that really does perform as advertised.
It's entirely modern, it's highly adaptable, it's cost-effective, and it's more than capable of filling the needs of most global militaries. But the C-390 is at its most impressive when we compare it directly to the aircraft that it was built to replace, the Lockheed C-130.
In fact, we'll even be generous and compare it to the C-130J Super Hercules on offer today from Lockheed Martin. That is to say, the upgraded version that the C-390 is beating out on the export market, instead of the older models that it's actually been designed to replace.
The millennium is able to carry 6,800 kilograms more than the Super Hercules when comparing their maximum payloads.
That's roughly the weight of the largest African bush elephants in the world. It could carry that maximum payload at a cruising speed of over 220 kilometers per hour faster, or 135 miles per hour faster, at a directly comparable range, at a service ceiling a full 2.5 kilometers higher.
It's 11,000 meters, or 36,000 feet, as compared to the C-130J's 8,500 meters, or 28,000 feet.
As payloads are adjusted down, the range of both aircraft will, of course, extend to match, but the C-390's advantages only grow more substantial.
The C-390 is capable of taking off from the same lengths and types of runways, whilst its jet engines are far better at dealing with the dirt and dust ingestion that can cause major headaches aboard any prop-powered airlifter.
And while those numbers compare the C-390 favorably to the C-130J, the millennium looks substantially better when compared against the older C-130s that it's designed to replace.
Best of all, the C-130J came with a flyaway cost of around $75 million in 2017, adjusting for inflation, that's about $100 million today. According to Defence Insight in 2024, the C-390 cost precisely the same, while offering better range, better capacity, and, just frankly, a better platform.
The Icarus Problem So, by all accounts, the C-390 Millennium is a very good tactical airlifter, with the on-paper specs, the real-world record, and the international buyers to bear out that assessment.
But no discussion of the C-390 is complete without discussing the aircraft's Achilles heel, a problem so fundamental that even today it could still doom the Millennium to fall far short of its global potential. See, the C-390 is facing what we'd refer to as an Icarus problem.
It's flying very high, demonstrating stunning potential, but there is a real chance that even as we speak, the C-390 is flying too close to the sun, building up a set of expectations that it might not actually be able to meet.
The problem isn't in the C-390's aerial capabilities. Those all come as advertised. The problem isn't any concern about its modular design, its price point, its onboard technology, or the challenges of switching over from the C-130 and other predecessors.
The real problem with the Millennium, and the only remaining threat that might be too great to overcome, is the issue of production capacity. As strange as it may sound, there's a distinct and growing possibility that the C-390 is just too popular for its own good.
Right now, Embraer has concrete orders for 53 copies of the C-390, not counting orders of undisclosed numbers of aircraft, orders with options to expand, or orders that haven't yet finalized as the time of writing.
That's 53 copies of the Millennium, including the 19 currently on order to its home nation of Brazil. As the time of writing in late 2025, a full six years after the first production copy of the C-390 was handed over to the Brazilian Air Force, a total of just 11 aircraft have been delivered, eight to Brazil, two to Portugal, and one to Hungary.
That's a rate of less than two aircraft deliveries per year.
Assuming that this delivery rate will remain unchanged, and even if Brazil doesn't add any new orders to its current queue, Embraer won't deliver all of the copies that have already been ordered until the year 2046.
Under any circumstances, a delivery rate that sluggish might be a problem, but the issue is made all the worse by the fact that many of the aircraft the C-390 are slated to replace needed to be out of service yesterday.
Take Austria, for example, where the nation's current fleet of three C-130s were purchased secondhand in the early 2000s, and have been flying for about 56 years each.
Austria has been trying to keep them flyable, but according to the nation's defense ministry, speaking in 2023 when it placed its C-390 order, those older aircraft will have to be retired by 2030. Even worse, Austria no longer has the money to extend the lifespans of its C-130s, because that money was diverted to buy their replacements.
Over in Brazil, however, Embraer only just started to assemble the first of Austria's four copies as of February 2025, and although it would be one thing if Austria was the only nation in this position and could just have its orders bumped to the front of the queue, this is a common problem shared by many of Embraer's customers.
After all, that was the entire point. producing the C390 at all, to ensure that Brazil was poised to replace older tactical airlifters as soon as they reached the end of their service lives.
Obviously, that's a problem for the countries that have already signed on to receive the Millennium, but it's a problem for Embraer as well, as it works overtime to court nations that would, in an ideal world, be happy just to pick up a few copies of the jet.
Each of those potential customers has to weigh the operational value of the C390 against the real-world constraints that come with producing it.
If one of those constraints is that a C390 order placed today isn't going to be filled for more than a decade at best, then it's going to be immediately prohibitive for countries that would otherwise love to make an investment.
Even though many of the Millennium's competitor aircraft might be slower, with a lesser range, worse avionics, and a diminished payload capacity, a nation could acquire them relatively quickly.
Countries that have waited a little too long to phase out their older airlifters, and now have to get a replacement on tight timelines in order to avoid putting their own people at risk, can't take a chance on an aircraft that risks being delivered late, let alone an aircraft where at this point a lengthy production timeline is all but guaranteed.
Embraer is working hard to try and scale up its production capacity, trying to make good on what it forecast in 2024 to be a market for around 500 aircraft in the next 20 years, plus another 260 airlifters around the world that will need to be replaced in that same period.
Embraer is trying to expand its production lines as quickly as possible, and notes that already it's able to deliver a full 18 copies of the Millennium each year. It's trying to open up new assembly lines in India, while deepening its aerospace cooperation in Sweden.
But even though the assembly lines are ready, Embraer's partners in industry, they are not.
Embraer is a Brazilian-led effort, but it incorporates technology for corporations all across the globe, and right now Embraer's assembly lines are operating at just a fraction of their overall potential, because issues earlier in the aircraft supply chain have yet to be addressed. Luckily for the C-390, that's a fixable problem.
Embraer's CEO told Global Media in October 2025 that its supply chain bot on X will hopefully be overcome by 2027, clearing the way for a dramatic increase in its capacity.
Address those bot on X on schedule, and Embraer could fulfill all of its existing orders by 2030 at the latest, setting the stage to accept a new onslaught of contracts from a new array of customers. But fail to address its problems in time, and Embraer's C-390 may still turn out to be just a shadow of what it might have been.
Make no mistake, the Millennium has already proved that it's a top-of-the-line, highly innovative, truly next-generation aircraft. But in hindsight, that might have been the easy part. If the C-390 is to cement its place as the future of tactical airlift, then there's still a lot more work to be done.
