On the island territory of Greenland, one thing is oh so clear. The status quo cannot hold. In the opening weeks of 2026, the NATO alliance has been pushed to the rink of failure as European and Canadian leaders try with all their might to shut down Washington's dog of an outright takeover.
US President Donald Trump wants to see the US flag flying over Greenland. America's closest allies since the start of the Cold War insist the island belongs to Denmark. And they also say that changing its ownership by force would be an ultimate and final betrayal.
There are two paths laid out before Greenland's 57,000 residents today, one under Uncle Sam and one under, let's say, Uncle Olaf. But at this point, both of those paths share one critical element in common. The future of Greenland is militarized in a way that Greenland hasn't experienced since the height of the Cold War.
At the core of Washington's argument over Greenland is that the island is strategically critical to the survival of both the US and, by default, its allies in Europe. Denmark and other European nations argue that America can already protect Greenland however it wishes and that Danish sovereignty must be respected.
But they don't reject the fundamental idea of Greenland's strategic relevance.
They simply argue that NATO, not the United States alone, should watch over it.
Either way, the combination of pressure from Washington and genuine geopolitical evolution in recent years led to a common conclusion that no matter who's responsible, someone is going to have to defend Greenland and they're going to have to do a far better job than what Denmark, the US, and other NATO members have done for the last few decades.
When we break down the challenges of defending the territory of Greenland, we've got to break the question down into a few component parts.
We'll discuss the challenges of defending Greenland along three distinct axes, protecting its airspace, guarding against surface and undersea naval threats, and defending against the threat of missiles.
We're not going to spend much time on ground forces, after all, while Greenland is very strategically important, it's so inhospitable and so sparsely populated that it would hardly be worth the trouble to capture if an adversary in wartime conditions could just destroy its military installations from long range.
In each section, we're going to provide not one, but two answers.
An explanation of the United States' ability to tackle the challenge at hand, and an explanation of the collective abilities of other NATO nations to do the same, without America's involvement. In that exercise, our goal is not to make an argument for US control over Greenland instead of NATO control or vice versa.
Really, it'd be nice to see Washington and its NATO allies collaborate to enhance Greenland's defense instead of ceding the territory in one way or the other.
Now the first challenge that we're going to tackle is air defense, where Greenland poses several unique problems at once. While the island does have a few airstrips fit for military use, most of its territory is completely undeveloped, meaning that air patrols over most of its territory must be done at extended range.
Many of the airports that are available are only able to host short takeoff and landing aircraft, and some of them lack consistent de-icing services, especially in the dead of winter.
Weather conditions are often extreme. Temperatures regularly drop below minus 50 Celsius or minus 58 Fahrenheit, and the few airfields that do exist today are many- mostly dual-use, sharing space with civilian aircraft on a daily basis.
Now, it's easy enough to identify long-term solutions to a couple of those problems, whether it's the US or the nations of NATO implementing the necessary fixes.
To expand airstrip infrastructure, nations can build more airstrips and attach them to dedicated military installations with no civilian traffic. They can ensure that those airstrips are long enough to host many different kinds of aircraft, and they can invest in the equipment and manpower required for de-icing.
They can build heated hangars to keep cold, sensitive aircraft.
These are relatively warm so they can start up, and they can position new air bases in remote or undeveloped areas where aircraft can land, refuel, undergo maintenance, and generally make air patrol a bit easier. But those are all long-term fixes, and they'd require very substantial investment from the US, NATO, or both.
In the nearer term, the biggest problem for any nation to solve is the problem of range.
If either NATO or the United States would like to conduct consistent, regular air patrols over Greenland's territory, then they'd need to leverage long-range reconnaissance aircraft, long-range armed aircraft capable of threat interception, and almost certainly air-to-air refueling tankers.
When it comes to tankers, the United States is by far the most capable nation on Earth, operating more of the aircraft than any other nation combined.
That being said, most of its workhorse airlifters would struggle to operate in Greenland, partly because refueling is technically difficult in very cold weather, during polar night and in high-turbulence or low-visibility environments, and partly because they require long runways.
With a relatively light fuel load, an aircraft like the KC-135 could take off from, say, nuke, but would then have to travel 1,500 kilometers to rendezvous with aircraft patrolling Greenland's northern edge.
Propeller-driven KC-130 could take off on far shorter runways and fly at suitably long range to handle refueling missions in theory, but can carry less of a fuel load and flies considerably slower. For Europe, however, the situation isn't much better.
While NATO members Germany, France, Italy, Sweden, and Canada each operate small handfuls of the KC-130J, they have far fewer refuelers at their disposal, even collectively, than the United States.
They do, however, have the A400M Atlas, a high-payload, refueler-capable aircraft that can operate on runways of under a kilometer in length, arguably the single best aircraft in any NATO arsenal to be based consistently on Greenland's territory for refueling purposes.
And then there's the question of the patrol and reconnaissance aircraft that NATO would have to dispatch.
One armed, long-range option that Denmark is already investing in is the P-8 Poseidon, a Boeing 737-based aircraft with 11 hardpoints for various conventional weapons, a very long range, and advanced onboard avionics and sensor technology.
Denmark recently ordered three to watch over Greenland and the Faroe Islands, while Canada, Germany, Norway, and the UK will have 38 once all deliveries are complete, and the US has nearly 140. They're fit for Arctic patrol missions and can accept aerial refueling, but they do come with a few drawbacks.

Slow and is a risk of confrontation, they are very expensive assets to lose with too many crew members on board.
They can also fly out of only a couple of airbases across Greenland, including America's Ptutfik space base and two dual-use civilian airfields. Instead, any effort to actually defend Greenland will need to rely on combat-ready fighter aircraft, where, again, range becomes a serious problem.
Several American and European aircraft types can serve as interceptors if needed, but they suffer from range issues, making them less than ideal for sustained air patrol. America's F-16 and F-A-18, Sweden's Gripen, and the fifth-generation F-22 Raptor, unless it's using external fuel tanks.
The F-35 in both US and European arsenals is a better fifth-generation option, although it too would probably require at least one air-to-air rendezvous with a refueler to conduct long patrols.
The Eurofighter Typhoon and France's Rafale are capable fourth-generation alternatives, while America's F-15EX might be the best tactical option of all, capable of carrying several external fuel tanks, along with so much payload that it hardly matters if an adversary sees a thing coming.
Greenland's climate will be an issue for some of those aircraft, particularly the F-35 and the Eurofighter. And the F-15EX has recently had some cold-weather-related issues of its own, although strict maintenance and heated base facilities may help those problems somewhat.
From the air, we turn our attention to the sea, where protecting Greenland isn't just a matter of patrolling the island's territorial waters. Greenland is expected to be critical in a fast-approaching period of upheaval in maritime trade, with melting Arctic ice allowing the passage of cargo vessels for some or all of the year.
With Arctic sea lanes hypothetically open for business, many global vessels are expected to bypass inconvenient routes, like the Panama and Suez Canals, or when they can simply sail up and over the Arctic instead, saving both time and money and insulating themselves against geo-strategic risk.
But the United States, Canada, Russia, and the NATO nations with a foothold in the Arctic, as well as distinctly non-Arctic China, all understand the change that's coming, and each of those nations clearly believes that competition in the Arctic will be fierce.
Nations that could protect sea lanes and shipping stand to benefit, and those that can't are likely to be left behind. The trickiest maritime challenges to handle in the Arctic environment, like Greenland, are anti-submarine operations.
For much of the year, under current conditions, submarines can operate at will under thick sea ice, which helps to obscure their presence from observers at or above the water's surface. Greenland's highly complex geography makes it easy for submarines to hide, even in areas where they could monitor future sea lanes and then prowl them at will.
The temperature and salinity of water in this area makes submarine hunting more challenging, especially for NATO nations like Denmark, where the Toyota Sonar arrays that are most helpful in tracking submarines simply are not available on the ships those nations possess.

When it comes to anti-submarine warfare, the United States does possess a greater range of assets than the vast majority of NATO nations, with the added benefit of those assets all being gathered under one roof.
The US Navy has at its disposal a full 11 aircraft carriers, 83 cruisers, frigates and destroyers, 50 dedicated attack submarines, well over 100 Poseidon anti-submarine warplanes, and ample reconnaissance and strike drones, anti-sub helicopters, and other assets that could identify, track, and destroy submarines in the area if necessary.
That being said, the US does face a few problems in defending Greenland and other Arctic waters by itself.
America maintains a globally active blue water navy, it regularly patrols and travels to every corner of the globe, and although under Donald Trump, Washington is trying to reduce its maritime obligations and its global presence, it's still got to divide its naval assets between many different priorities.
Only a fraction of those naval assets could ever be focused on Greenland, especially considering the number of ships that will be out for maintenance, training, or other reasons at any given time.
The European nations of NATO, plus Canada, don't have to accommodate quite as global emissions set, meaning that if they really put their heads together and got to work, they could probably concentrate a higher proportion of their naval assets around Greenlandic territory.
Now, this video would get very long very quickly if we were to go through every asset of every NATO member navy, but we can run through a few of the big ones and the ones that would likely be charged with watching over Arctic territory. Among the Nordic nations, Norway sails four frigates optimized for anti-sub warfare plus six attack subs.
Sweden sails five optimized anti-sub corvettes and two attack submarines. Finland will soon sail four corvettes of its own, and Denmark operates nine frigates with new submarines on the way. Among NATO's most powerful navies, Britain sails two aircraft carriers, seven attack submarines, six destroyers, and seven frigates.
France sails five attack subs, 16 major surface combatants, including nine specialized anti-submarine destroyers, and an aircraft carrier of its own. Germany sails six attack subs and 11 frigates. Italy contributes eight attack subs, 15 destroyers and frigates, and its own aircraft carrier.
And Canada operates four attack subs and a dozen frigates. Without accounting for the rest of NATO, those nations combine to offer ample heavy warships and undersea vessels to get the job done.
Where they're lacking, in relative terms, are in their aerial surveillance capabilities, their undersea intelligence, and the equipment on board those ships to get the job done.
For any nation trying to defend Greenland, some of the burden of active surveillance could be offset with static defenses. Those might include anything from fixed sonar arrays, listening stations that monitor undersea areas, to network sensor technology that can perceive and track the presence of large underwater objects.
As drone technology becomes more sophisticated, nations can also deploy unmanned underwater vehicles, including very long-duration autonomous models that can detonate and destroy a submarine themselves, like America's Manta Ray by DARPA.
However, each of those assets would allow nations to devote fewer ships and fewer personnel to Greenland at a given time, knowing that they don't have to engage in constant active monitoring of the zone. Again, infrastructure will play a major role.
The United States already controls the world's northernmost deep-water port at Patoofik Space Base, and the US or NATO could expand that facility or others to base patrol and quick-reaction naval forces.
And then there's the question of defense on the water's surface, where, in broad strokes, the question of ship availability remains the same. The US and NATO both have ample heavy warships.
The US has more overall, while NATO can dedicate a higher proportion to Greenland, and by investing in base infrastructure and other fixed technology, either the US or NATO could make the task of defending Greenland a bit easier on themselves.
In a discussion of surface naval assets, space-based surveillance also plays a greater role, since satellite imagery can easily capture surface ships transiting the Arctic in clear conditions.
Here, the United States is far better equipped for the task than NATO or Canada, with NATO members known to be rather egregiously reliant on the United States for space-based intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance.
But even if NATO were to play a leading role in protecting Greenland, NATO's intelligence-sharing relationship with the US is firmly established and, hopefully, not quite as vulnerable to breakdown as other elements of the partnership.
But there's also another factor to consider where Greenland is concerned. Icebreakers. After decades in which the Arctic has been mostly neglected, neither the US nor the other nations of NATO are particularly prepared for icebreaking operations for right now.
The US sails just three icebreakers in total, although it plans to acquire 11 more in a deal with Finland, starting with deliveries in 2028. Canada, too, is looking rapidly to expand its icebreaker fleet. The Nordic countries combine to sail several of them for military and civilian purposes, and so on.
China, meanwhile, seems to be working to rapidly expand its icebreaker fleet, while Russia possesses eight nuclear-powered icebreakers, the only nation in the world to do so.
The reason that those icebreakers are so important isn't just to ensure that other naval vessels can navigate the Arctic as needed, although, in fairness, that is a rather important capability to have if you're going to claim to have a functioning Arctic naval force at all.
Instead, the real value in icebreakers is in clearing the way for trade vessels as often and for as much as possible of the year.
As sea ice melts year over year, nations that can consistently deploy icebreakers above the Arctic Circle in great enough numbers that they can spare icebreakers for regular ship escort duties are able to clear sea lanes earlier, keep them open later in the year, rescue vessels that are getting stuck, and provide priority escort to the most important trade
Ships as needed, even in harsh future winters.
China has already set its sights on becoming a guarantor for Arctic navigation, working toward what some regional experts refer to as the Polar Silk Road. For U.S. and the nations of NATO, becoming competitive there or even gaining a controlling share of the global icebreaker fleet will come with massive future benefits.
Not only would NATO-controlled or U.S.-controlled Arctic sea lanes bring massive commercial benefit, but they'd confer a strategic advantage upon those nations. nations in times of conflict or heightened tension with China or Russia.
As for the difference in U.S. capability to clear sea ice versus the capabilities of other NATO members, the key thing to understand is that nobody is currently ready to assert ice-breaking dominion across the Arctic. But all sides understand that this is an area of critical future competition.
Finally, there is the matter of missile defense, where in some ways the conversation around protecting Greenland is quite simple.
The United States has based key missile monitoring infrastructure on Greenland for decades, not because Greenland itself is a target for intercontinental ballistic missile strikes, but because it's positioned right underneath the northerly path that Russia and American ICBMs would follow in the event of a world-ending nuclear exchange.
Those assets are, again, already available to the nations of NATO, and while it's not inconceivable that this element of the transatlantic alliance could fall apart, it's also not that likely.
Today, the conversation around Greenland-based missile defense goes beyond the question of monitoring operations to the problem of missile interception.
In discussing the potential for the U.S. to seize Greenland, Trump has cited the importance of America's new Golden Dome initiative, a comprehensive, layered missile defense system that would shield the United States from long-range attack.
The rationale that Trump absolutely needs Greenland in order to complete the Golden Dome is dubious this at best, not only because the Golden Dome system hasn't fully been worked out yet, but because it's intended to use space-based missile interceptor technology, particularly to intercept the ICBMs that would overfly Greenland.
Also, the parts of the Golden Dome plan that do exist have already identified the points where ground-based infrastructure would need to be located, and Greenland isn't on the list. So, it's not clear what about Greenland would be so important, other than the monitoring technology that's already present there.
But if either the U.S. or NATO were to go about militarizing and defending Greenland, the island's missile intercepting potential is obvious.
Whether it's interceptors meant to protect the United States, or interceptors meant to protect Europe, or both for that matter, assets positioned on the island could pick off Russian, Chinese, or other ICBMs faster than systems based in the U.S. or in continental Europe. Missile interception, in essence, is a violent rendezvous.
An interceptor has to get to the same spot as an incoming missile, converge their flight paths, and then destroy that incoming missile as it travels.
So, there's a lot of benefit to positioning interceptors as close to launching ICBMs as possible in order to cut down on the time required to intercept. Positioning interceptors in Greenland would allow both a quicker contact with an ICBM and also a contact location that's further from the target zone than would otherwise be possible.
As for basing missile interceptors on Greenlandic territory, that's where things get complicated.
Greenland's entire ice sheet is constantly shifting, and that problem will only get worse as ice melt happens faster and faster. Back in the Cold War, in an experimental underground initiative called Project Iceworm, the U.S. has learned firsthand how difficult it can be to keep underground assets. The U.S. from simply getting crushed over time.
As a result, safe underground storage of ballistic missile interceptors pre-positioned in silos would be prohibitively expensive to build and keep safe. Instead, Greenlandic interceptors would need to be situated in above-ground emplacements, probably static ones.
After all, Greenland has so little ground transport infrastructure that mobile launch systems would be pointless.
That, however, brings up another strategic problem. Because those stationary interceptors could be mapped by a satellite, does their presence on Greenland make the island more of a target than it otherwise would be? And just how much risk to those interceptors is worth accepting if they stand a chance at intercepting an all-out nuclear exchange?
Whether it's Washington or Brussels that defends Greenland in the years to come, the status quo in the Arctic appears to have already shifted past a point of no return. Either Greenland will be protected or it and the rest of the Arctic will be ceded to competitors halfway around the world. That choice is no choice at all.
And although the war of words over Greenland isn't yet finished, its militarized future may be inevitable. Thank you for watching.
