This is the Iran Daily Dispatch, episode eight: Thursday, the twenty-sixth of March, 2026. I’m Tessa Danvers, for Fronts.co. Today, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi rejected the United States’ offer of peace negotiations, to end the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

In comments made after Iran received a US peace proposal, Araghchi insisted that although America’s proposal is being reviewed, Iran has no intent to engage with Washington beyond the exchange of messages through mediators, and will not consider any plan to end the conflict unless Iran’s own demands are met.

Araghchi’s statements come only one day after the United States claimed that peace negotiations were already underway. We covered the US position on negotiations in detail, in yesterday’s installment of the Iran Daily Dispatch.

Araghchi’s rebuttal would seem to confirm suspicions expressed by US, Israeli, and Iranian officials anonymously, as well as global experts on the conflict and on Iran specifically, that Iran would demand serious concessions from the United States before agreeing to end the conflict.

In conflicting reports on the state of affairs behind the scenes, some outlets reported on Wednesday that back-channel negotiations were in progress, to work out an agreement for talks to take place. Opposing reports maintained that those secret discussions were largely superficial, with each side emphasizing its unwillingness to compromise.

On Wednesday evening, US President Donald Trump insisted otherwise; quote: “They are negotiating, by the way, and they want to make a deal so badly. But they're afraid to say it, because they figure they'll be killed by their own people”.

Araghchi’s public position has amplified an ongoing debate, in the United States and abroad, over the conflicting concepts of ‘victory’ that are driving each nation’s decision-making.

On Wednesday, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt underscored the Trump administration’s position on victory and defeat; quote: “If they—“ Iran— “fail to understand that they have been defeated militarily, and will continue to be, President Trump will ensure that they are hit harder than they have ever been hit before”.

But while the United States seems to expect Iran to concede, after displays of American military might, Iran’s leaders appear to have a very different idea of their own position.

As countless retired officials and Iran analysts have pointed out, both before and after the start of this conflict, Iran’s ultimate objective is the collective survival of the Islamic Republic—and, as of now, the United States does not appear to pose a truly existential threat to the Iranian regime.

That may change, after a further military escalation by the United States or Israel, but Iran’s rejection of /any/ opportunity to negotiate with the US, would suggest that Iran’s focus on collective survival is unchanged.

The regime’s stance was underscored further, when Iranian state media referenced the nation’s own alleged five-point proposal on Wednesday, echoing demands that anonymous senior Iranians shared with Western outlets.

Those five points include a complete end to US and Israeli attacks and assassinations, the payment of war reparations, guarantees against future conflict, and more.

Those terms are understood to be unacceptable for the United States and Israel, and for Iranian state TV to even acknowledge those claims publicly, amounts to an invitation for the United States to conclude that peace talks are meaningless.

In Washington, Pentagon officials provided a classified briefing to legislators that drew nearly immediate backlash, including from members of Donald Trump’s own caucus.

Republican Representative Nancy Mace said on social media after the briefing, quote: “The justifications presented to the American public for the war in Iran were not the same military objectives we were briefed on today in the House Armed Services Committee. This gap is deeply troubling.

The longer this war continues, the faster it will lose the support of Congress and the American people.” Also on Wednesday, the New York Times reported that Iranian attacks have rendered several US bases in the Middle East, quote, “all but uninhabitable”, particularly those in Kuwait.

Citing US military leaders and political officials, the Times claimed that US forces have decentralized their operations, and are now working out of hotels and offices scattered across the region. Iran has accused the US of operating from hotels and other civilian buildings for weeks.

Those revelations contrasted with US CENTCOM’s accounting of its work during the conflict, in a Wednesday-afternoon video statement by commanding Admiral Bradley Cooper. In his remarks, Cooper indicated that the US has now struck over ten thousand military targets across Iran, and that its operations are, quote, “on plan or ahead of plan”.

After the congressional briefing that left Representative Nancy Mace outraged, higher-ranking Republican legislators suggested that ground operations in Iran would be forthcoming shortly. Two of those legislators were the chairs of the Armed Services Committees of the Senate and House of Representatives, respectively.

On Wednesday, Israel’s kinetic strikes on Iran focused largely on an Iranian shipyard, described by Jerusalem as the only Iranian facility that can build submarines and support systems. Israel also claimed a strike on the Underwater Research Center in the city of Isfahan.

Israeli strikes also targeted the capital city of Tehran, heavily damaging what Israel claims are cruise missile production sites. Israeli and Gulf sources reported that the newly promoted military chief of Iran, Mohammed Zolghadr, may also have been assassinated, after less than a day in his new role.

In Iraq, however, the nation’s Defense Ministry expressed outrage over an airstrike, and aircraft cannon fire, that it said targeted a military clinic.

Seven Iraqi troops were killed in the strike, and while Iraq did not name the nation responsible, the strike and attack mechanism is consistent with US operations against the Popular Mobilization Forces, a loose coalition of Iran-aligned militias.

In the Arab Gulf states, internal reports suggest a growing enthusiasm for the idea of direct participation in the Iran war, with Turkey conducting, quote, “intensive diplomatic efforts” to try and prevent that outcome, according to Bloomberg News.

Over the last twenty-four hours, Iran has continued missile and drone attacks against several states in the region. In Kuwait, the Ministry of the Interior announced the arrests of six people who had allegedly planned to assassinate national leaders.

According to Kuwaiti authorities, five of the six suspects were Kuwaiti citizens, and all six were believed to have links to the Lebanon-based Hezbollah organization.

Meanwhile, Russian state media announced the evacuation of 163 staff members of Russia’s state nuclear energy corporation, Rosatom, from Iran’s Bushehr nuclear power plant, bringing the total number of Russian nationals /left/ at Bushehr, to roughly three hundred.

Finally, public opinion polling in the United States suggests both slipping support for the ongoing war, and broader economic concerns that may threaten the war’s political viability.

On Wednesday, the Associated Press and the NORC Center for Public Affairs Research released a joint poll showing that nearly sixty percent of Americans deemed US military conduct in Iran, quote, “excessive”, while two-thirds rated it, quote, “extremely or very important”, for the administration to prevent US oil and gas prices from rising.

On average, US gasoline prices have jumped over one dollar since the start of the month of March, and have reached their highest average price since August of 2022, at three dollars and ninety-eight cents. Prices have only crossed the threshold of a four-dollar-per-gallon average twice in the US, since the 2008 financial crisis.
