Ladies and gentlemen, good morning, good evening, good afternoon, whenever and wherever you're listening to us from. This is the Middle East Roundtable podcast with me, your host Wilfred Miner, Africa correspondent for Warfronts, Homefronts, Fronts, basically all of our media properties. And I'm joined today by my colleague Kyle Mouran.

Our dear friend Evan Maloney is currently taking a short detour through the state of Hormuz to tell us what's happening there, but he'll be back next week. Kyle, say hi to the people. Hello, everyone.

Kyle Mouran here, as always, with Wilfred. Good to be here. And just have to say, Evan must be racking up some serious Hormuz experience points here.

He's been deployed to the strait for many a times throughout this conflict, so we're very grateful to have him so willing to travel. He's been to Hormuz and he's been to Bab el-Mandeb, and I believe to a few other locations as well. So certainly looking forward to his report there.

We have many stories, as always, that we're tracking. A quick overview here. So it seems that Iran's grip on the strait of Hormuz is slipping even more.

So the latest article from CNBC using data from the tracking company Kepler shows that crude oil flows through Hormuz were at pre-war levels as of Monday. And meanwhile, in Iraq, the United States, as well as a few others, including Italy, have finished the withdrawal, completely ending the Iraqi part of Operation Inherent Resolve.

So Iraq is currently not having any U.S. military presence there, as far as we know of, at least.

And more politically, perhaps, when this has been a subject of a video we did on war fronts yesterday, Israeli politics are seriously heating up with the less than a month-long war. So we're going to have to wait and see. to go before their national election.

And there's been quite a lot of stories breaking about just how much and how much Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had or had not been warned in advance that Hamas was planning something big prior to the October 7th attacks and massacres.

So it does start to seem as though the walls are closing in on Bibi a bit, although he's certainly somebody that it's not historically wise to bet against politically. So we're going to have quite an episode today here, Wilfred. Absolutely, my friend, quite an episode.

And I do want to say that Evan must be racking up those frequent flyer miles because he's been out to the Middle East a lot more than either of us have been. You and I really need to catch up before the interesting part of this Middle East conflict dies down and we don't have as many stories to tell as Evan.

Because, lads, ladies and gentlemen, you have no idea how cool the stories Evan tells us whenever he covers parts of the Middle East.

We can't really put in a podcast. But yeah, back to serious news. It has been a wild, wild week.

And Kyle, you have a video out on war fronts this week. So... The audience, we're recording this on Thursday, the first of October.

Happy New Month, everyone. Kyle, your video came out, I believe, on Wednesday. That will be yesterday.

So walk us through the situation in Israel. What did Netanyahu know? How much cryo-warning did he have?

Where did he get it from? And perhaps most importantly, why didn't he act on it? Yeah, so this is

Firstly, the million dollar question. So I will do my best to answer as many of those as I can. So earlier this last month, it is October 1st now.

So last month in early September, September 8th, I believe, the Israeli outlet Haaretz broke the story that the president of the United Arab Emirates, Mohammed bin Zayed, or MBZ, as he's known, was in contact with Netanyahu prior to the October 7th massacre. Where he had warned his Israeli counterpart that Hamas was indeed planning something big.

He wasn't entirely sure of what it was, but he did warn that it would be sizable enough to, quote, destabilize the entire region, end quote.

So that's certainly something that should have been raising alarm bells. And then this has been further compounded by several more stories. So later on in the month, it

It broke that in the Atlantic, that Egypt had also joined that club in warning Israel that Hamas was up to something. So the Egyptian head of intelligence, Abbas Kamel, flew to Ben-Gurion Airport in Cessna, I believe. He was only there for a little over an hour.

But when the head of a country's intelligence service visits another country on a short, mission like that, it's a big deal. And even though it wasn't publicly reported at the time, the powers that be in Jerusalem certainly were aware of the visitation.

So hard to imagine that this didn't make its way up, at least most of the way to the top, if not all the way to the top.

Same thing here. We don't know the exact details of what Kamel said, but we do know that he was quite, adamant that Hamas was planning something big and was urging Israel to take this seriously. And then further down the road the Wall Street Journal broke that Egypt provided not just that in-person warning, but three separate warnings.

So three total, one of which was the Kamel visit, that this, that this attack would be happening, including one that came in the form of a phone call. And then the other one was a phone call directly to Netanyahu. So just days before the attack.

So this is certainly a big story in Israel, as well as the wider world. As to the question of what Netanyahu did with it seems like he was convinced that the, any threat was from the West Bank. This is partially due to the fact that Israel was in negotiations with Hamas at the time, although those negotiations were not in the form of a phone call.
